Portland

Largest city in Oregon and the county seat of Multnomah County.

Welcome to Portland

Enjoy the amazing beauty, greenery, and picture-perfect scenery in Oregon’s ‘City of Roses’.

Portland is the largest city in Oregon and the county seat of Multnomah County. Named after Portland, Maine, the city traces its origins to the 1840s, when the Oregon Trail brought settlers to the region. They called the area Stumptown because they had to cut down many trees to make room for the settlement (it was renamed Portland in 1845).

The city’s proximity to the Pacific Ocean and location at the convergence of the Columbia and Willamette Rivers provided significant advantages as a port city. This, coupled with early agricultural success, led to increased growth. Portland flourished during the 20th century and is now considered a progressive city and tech hub.

Local Lifestyle

Portland has a laid-back, slower vibe than bigger cities like San Francisco or Seattle. People love their work-life balance and favor a casual dress code.

Respect for the environment is highly encouraged, and recycling is a way of life. Carrying groceries in plastic bags, littering, and other acts of environmental disrespect are frowned upon.
Being weird is part of Portland’s mystique. Locals delight in the pleasantly unexpected, whether joining in on naked bike rides or zooming down an extinct volcano in soapbox derby cars. Portland Saturday Market along Naito Parkway is also a top attraction.
